The Santiago Bernabeu Trophy is dedicated to the memory of long-time Real Madrid president Santiago Bernabeu. It is a friendly tournament organised each year by Real Madrid at the beginning of the season, somewhere around the end of August or the beginning of September.From 1979 to 1984 and in 1986 it was contested by 4 teams, with semifinals, third place match and final. In 1985 and since 1987 only one match between Real Madrid and an invited team was played.The 2002 tournament consisted again of 4 teams, on the special occasion of Real Madrid's centenary as the team were founded on March 6, 1902. In recent years it has also served as a game to present the new players on the squad brought in through the summer transfer market.

Galatasaray to face Real Madrid in the Santiago Bernabeu Trophy

The 33rd edition of the competition will take place on 24 August.Real Madrid will face Galatasaray in the 33rd edition of the Santiago Bernabeu Trophy on Wednesday 24 August. Jose Mourinho's side will defend the title they won last year against Peñarol Montevideo.Galatasaray will be the first Turkish side to participate in the competition. They finished eighth in the Turkish league last season and recently strengthened their squad with the signings of Ujfalusi and Elmander.Real Madrid and Galatasaray have faced each other three times. Their first match was in the 2000 European Super Cup, which the Turks won thanks to a goal in extra time. They came face to face again a few months later in the Champions League quarterfinals; Galatasaray won the first leg in Istanbul 3-2, but the Whites sealed their pass to the next round with a 3-0 win at the Bernabeu in the return match.
